aware of one important thing. “My bulbs are travelling
all over the world, even into the desert”. Ever since
that moment the camel has been the trademark for Fred. de Meulder.
The First and Second World War
During the First World War, Fred de Meulder was still able to run its business
by focusing on the Scandinavian market. Sales files from 1916 illustrate
that the primary source of income comes from customers in Scandinavia and
Italy. In 1936, the 57-year old Frederique de Meulder passed away and handed
over the company to his two sons Charles and Ben. They were facing a difficult
period because while the company managed to do business during the First
World War, it barely survived during the Second World War.
Nevertheless it was able to make a new but
difficult start when the war was over. There were import restrictions
in effect between many European countries which hindered the
business. For example the exporting of dahlias to France was
